STOKES

Anson Phelps Stokes published in 1910 the Stokes Records in which he states that there were Stokes in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, England, and that they suffered much from family feuds. There is information on Adam de Stokke from 1297 and an effigy of Adam De Stok in the church at Great Bedwynk near Seend. The Stokes were Lords of Stoke Haule. Variant spellings of the name are frequently encountered, i.e. Stoaks, Stikes, Stooks, Stocks, Stacks, etc.

On 12 September 1900 descendants in Starksboro VT of Jethro Stokes and David Mason organized the Stokes & Mason Reunion. They elected the typical four officers and a chaplain. They began a record book containing minutes of the meetings and a listing of descendants with dates of birth and death. The gatherings were held regularly through the 42nd annual reunion on 22 Aug 1941 when a gap occurred due to the war years. The 43rd reunion was held 21 Aug 1946 and catch-up pages on the vital records was entered into the book. They scheduled a 44th reunion for 1947 but the photocopied pages of the record book owned by Bertha (Brown) Hanson do not continue.

It is known that the father of Jethro Stokes who came to Starksboro was the son of James of Northfield NH. Research in 1992 in that area by Phillip M. Bowler, Sr. of 395 North St., Burlington VT provides several leads. Mr. Bowler believes that the following ancestry is that of James:

BENJAMIN STOKES, of Nottingham NH, b.___, d. before 20 Nov 1796, m. 12 Aug 1740 Boston MA Hannah CUTTS.

He was probably the Benjamin Stokes from Nottingham who on 17 Aug 1776 signed the "Association Test" which opposed the hostile activities of the British against the American colonies.

There were two Benjamin Stokes on the 1790 census of NH: one in Nottingham with 2 males 16+, 2 males under 16 and 3 females; and one in Northwood with 1 male 16+, 2 males under 16, and 1 female.

That James and Asa were sons of this Benjamin is evidenced by a Rockingham Co. NH deed vol 151, p. 177 dated 21 Nov 1796:

"Know all men by these presents that I James Stokes of Nottingham in the County of Rockingham & State of New Hampshire Laborer For & in consideration of the sum of Nineteen dollars to me in hand held before the delivery hereof by Asa Stokes of the same Nottingham - a minor under the age of twenty one years - laborer The Rec[eip]t. whereof I have by these presents given bargained sold remised alienated acquitted & forever disposed of & released unto him the said Asa Stokes, his heirs & assigns All the right, title, messuage Intact or unto all the lands tenements or hereditaments belonging to or in possession of our late father - Benjamin Stokes of the same Nottingham, husbandman. To have and to hold..." [etc].

Children:

i. possibly Benjamin, the one in Northwood in 1790, m. 29 Nov 1784 Susanna KNOWLTON. They lived on the road above the schoolhouse in Northwood for about 20 years. A small unpublished manuscript, "History of Northwood" in the NH State Library, states on p. 39: "Thirty acres of its (Lot 8, 7th Range) northern end were bought May 26, 1796 by Benjamin Stokes." Possible sons:

1 Johnathan, m. Abigail HOITT/HOYT.

2 Jeremiah, m. 29 Jun 1808 Polly DURGIN. Jeremiah served 60 days in the War of 1812.

1 ii. James

iii. Asa, m. 12 Nov 1797 Abigail WIGGIN of Durham (?)

iv. Deborah, m. c1800 Stoughton TUTTLE, Jr.

1. JAMES STOKES, b.___, d.___, m. (possibly Mary, dau. of Nicholas TUTTLE of Nottingham). Starksboro descendants thought her name was Abigail ___. James lived in Nottingham and Canterbury, part of which became Northfield NH.

Child (perhaps there were others):

2 i. Jethro, b. 21 Jul 1791 Northfield NH

2. JETHRO STOKES (James), b. 21 Jul 1791 Northfield NH, d. 8 Jan 1873 Starksboro VT ae 82 yrs, cause "Gravel", m. int. Northfield NH 5 Apr 1812 Martha, known as"Patty", dau. of Dea. David & Jemima (French) MASON, b. 9 Jul 1793, d. 13 Feb 1871 Starksboro VT. Jethro and Patty are buried in the Mason Hill Cemetery, Starksboro VT.

Bertha B. Hanson wrote the following in the 1966 Annual Report of the Town of Starksboro:

"In 1812 Jethro Stokes from Northfield, N.H. moved his family to Starksboro. He purchased property at the height of land on the road which leads from the old Mason Hill school house to the Harley Brace residence. Here he built a house and cleared land for a farm. This farm was operated by his descendants until 1909."

This property was deeded to Jethro on 17 Sep 1812 by Elijah Kellogg for $50, it being a tract in the Second Division Lot to the right of Benjamin Wait.

At the time of Jethro's arrival, the land was heavily timbered. In later life, he was heard to relate how he came alone and chose his place for his future home sitting down on a fallen tree trunk and resolving in his own mind to remain there on the land as long as he lived, which he did, clearing the land and teaching the first school taught in the neighborhood.

The Stokes, Mason, and Clifford families came to Starksboro from the Northfield NH area. The first to arrive was Jethro in 1812. Ebenezer Clifford arrived the following year and David Mason, Sr. acquired property in Starksboro in the fall of 1817.

Jethro appeared on the 1850 census in Starksboro, Dwelling #106; occupation, farmer; real estate value, $2500. On the 1860 census he was again listed as a farmer. This farm later was known as the George Stokes farm, and was later owned by H. C. Dike. It is on the 1860 census where Patty's name is given as Martha.

Andrew Brown, said of Jethro, that he always filled his grain measures heaping full when he sold grain to anyone, this was in a day when many would have make the measure skimpy.

Some researchers indicate that Jethro was in the War of 1812 but this has not been documented adequately for purposes here.
